Two New General Superintendents Elected 2017

Our new Board of General Superintendents: Dr. Eugénio Duarte, Dr. David Graves, Dr. David Busic, Dr. Gustavo Crocker, Dr. Filimão Chambo, and Dr. Carla Sunberg

The Assembly elected Dr. Filimão Chambo and Dr. Carla Sunberg as the 42nd and 43rd General Superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene, respectively. Dr. Chambo, whose studies include a Ph.D. in biblical literature from the University of Johannesburg, was born in Mozambique. He was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene in 2000. Prior to his election, he served (since 2009) as regional director of the Africa region of the Church of the Nazarene. He is married to Samantha, who is also an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene. They have two children, Tsakani Gabriella and Emanuel. For more information on the election of Dr. Fili Chambo, go to: http://www.nazarene.org/article/called-serve-chambo-elected-gs.

Dr. Sunberg, at the time of her election, was serving as president of Nazarene Theological Seminary. Her Ph.D. from Manchester University is in historical theology. Prior to her role at NTS, Dr. Sunberg served as co-district superintendent of the East Ohio district. Sunberg was born in Germany to Dr. and Mrs. Jerald Johnson (Jerald Johnson was the 24th General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene), became a registered nurse after her undergraduate training at MidAmerica Nazarene University, and later she and her family were pioneer missionaries to Russia. She is married to Dr. Charles “Chuck” Sunberg, who (along with their younger daughter) co-pastors the Shawnee Mission Church of the Nazarene in Kansas. The Sunbergs have two daughters, Christa Sunberg Mciver and Rev.
